![]() The label’s initial resistance to “Maybe I Deserve” naturally melted once it became a hit, and Tank’s sophomore album was led by “One Man,” another piano-driven ballad with shades of mid-Nineties Brian McKnight (especially the irresistible hit “Anytime”). “They say to me, ‘Tank, you’re not a proven producer, right? We’re gonna take this song, give it to proven producers, have them beef it up, make it a hit record.’ ” But none of those reworks were as stirring as the original, so the single was released as-is - written, produced, and sung solely by Tank. Then the label decided to bring in outsiders to redo the track. ![]() ![]() But the song’s success was never assured - Tank says his label didn’t trust the initial version of the track, so he almost sold it to Dave Hollister from the group Blackstreet. “Maybe I Deserve” set the template for those earlier years. “I go back - and there’s music to prove it.” “All the people who talk like, ‘Y’all should’ve heard this song, this album,’ they mostly couldn’t reference it, couldn’t find the complete experience,” Tank adds.Īnd the sweet? “Now people will know I was an artist that existed before 2010,” Tank says. “It’s bitter because I’ve missed out on 10 years’ worth of revenue, 10 years’ worth of discovery.” When he scored one of the biggest hits of his career, the platinum-certified “When We,” a few years ago, this could’ve driven new fans back to his older work - except that the material effectively didn’t exist in an easily accessible form. In August, Blackground announced that it would re-release 17 albums to streaming services, CD, and vinyl across a two-month period. Like the rest of the catalog owned by the label Blackground Records - including albums by Aaliyah, Toni Braxton, and Jojo, among others - this music was withheld from streaming services until recently, demonstrating how little control even famous musicians often have over the fate of their creations. That changes Friday, when Tank’s first album, 2001’s Force of Nature, and its two follow-ups, 2002’s One Man and 2007’s Sex, Love & Pain, finally become accessible to the streaming masses. But it’s never been available on streaming services. The track cracked the Top 20 on the Hot 100 and remains the singer’s highest-charting hit. “That took me from shows with 150 people showing up to nearly 3,000 people showing up in six months,” Tank says. Listeners could apparently relate: The song became a breakout hit. “Maybe I deserve/For you to stay out with him all night.” In R&B, it’s customary for the singer’s conviction to grow as the song progresses, so Tank’s imagery becomes increasingly vivid, but here, all his firepower is directed inward - by the end of the track, he’s practically begging his partner to lie to him, cheat on him, put him through hell, just to even the score and alleviate his guilt. This track is a triumph of self-torture: “Maybe I deserve/For you to go out and find some other guy,” Tank sings. Tank returned the next year with “Maybe I Deserve,” a single as durable as it is minimal - just a few scattered, gospel-leaning piano notes and a dusting of drums. The song just wasn’t that good, and I didn’t know it.” To make matters worse, radio execs kept seeing Tank’s posters - “the word ‘freaky,’ me with my shirt off, looking mean” - and deciding he was a rapper, putting him in an awkward position when he showed up at the stations’ shows ready to croon.īut a hit has a way of erasing all that came before it. “That’s the record I want people to forget and act like it never existed. “‘Freaky’ was almost the beginning of the end,” he says. It was a start, just not the one he hoped for. Next came the visual: “We spent like $500,000 shooting an elaborate video, blowing shit up, setting shit on fire, 10 dancers, crane shots, racing old vintage vehicles,” the singer recalls. He spent months and months writing songs he lined up a single called “Freaky,” which he released in 2000. After a 60-date arena tour as a backup vocalist for Ginuwine and Aaliyah in 1997, Durrell Babbs, the singer now known to R&B fans as Tank, was ready to venture out as a solo act. But in the 1990s, building that type of name recognition often took years. Today an unknown artist can post a snippet of a song on TikTok on a Friday and be famous 48 hours later. ![]() After trying to save his childhood friend, Toan finds himself transported to a mystical realm where a Fairy King gifts him the power of the Atlamilla, the only hope against the evil that threaten his world. A great evil known as the Dark Genie is shown approaching the world, and, out of nowhere, Toan’s childhood town is obliterated in a matter of moments. The player is then treated to a very intense opening cutscene that in some way mimics the opening of Ocarina of Time, but with a noticeably darker tone. ![]() ![]() This storybook approach acquaints the player with the game’s setting and characters fairly quickly, presenting the world in a more fantasy-driven way. Rather than crafting a title that could rival Zelda, it is more likely that Level-5 just wanted to make Dark Cloud as part of a larger fantasy canon - one that Zelda resides in - with an archetypal hero, like Link, that players could easily relate to as they began playing through the fantastic tale.Īs one learns from its storybook opening, Dark Cloud does diverge quite a lot from The Legend of Zelda in its presentation, as a narrator begins to tell the tale of Toan, a descendant of a legendary swordman sage’s line. An untrained eye might even confuse the two.īut for all the comparisons between Dark Cloud and Zelda, was Level-5’s PlayStation 2 title always intended to be an answer to Ocarina of Time and Nintendo? As far as we know, the developers at Level-5 have never revealed whether or not this imitation was their main goal. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino stated that the team simply wanted to make an original fantasy story. Link, the hero of Hyrule, is clad in green, wields a sword, has pointed ears, and is silent Toan, the hero of Norune Village, dons his own green cap, wields various swords, has pointed ears as well, and is just as much a silent protagonist. Critics at the time of the game’s release often compared its combat style and art style to those of Ocarina of Time, with Gamespot saying that “ Dark Cloud’s combat system is 100 percent Zelda” and IGN claiming that “the battle system seems like a direct rip of Ocarina of Time.”Īnother similarity often pointed out between Zelda and Dark Cloud - a common observation among players first picking up the games, in fact - comes with the design of their main protagonists. The title - and its sequel - were frequently called out as “Sony’s answer to Zelda,” a fantasy adventure game that could rival Nintendo’s premiere franchise. Developed by Level-5, Dark Cloud drew comparisons to games in the Zelda series, particularly Ocarina of Time. ![]() Scanning, Document Imaging, Software, OCR Software, ABBYYĪBBYY Fine Reader, ABBYY Fine Reader Corporate Download, ABBYY Fine Reader OCR, ABBYY Fine Reader Upgrade, ABBYY FineReader Corporate, ABBYY FineReader Corporate Concurrent, ABBYY FineReader Corporate Download, ABBYY FineReader Network, ABBYY FineReader OCR, ABBYY FineReader Professional, ABBYY FineReader Professional Download, ABBYY FineReader Professional Upgrade, ABBYY FineReader Upgrade, ABBYY OCR Server, ABBYY Recognition Server, ABBYY Recognition Server CPU License, ABBYY Recognition Server Enterprise, ABBYY Recognition Server Unlimited, ABBYY Recognition Server Web Services, download abbyy finereader, Fine Reader, Fine Reader Corporate 3 Concurrent, Fine Reader Corporate Network, Fine Reader Corporate Upgrade, Fine Reader Pro Upgrade, FineReader, FineReader Corporate Download, FineReader OCR, FineReader Professional, Recognition Server, Recognition Server Download New Jersey (Newark, Trenton, NJ) and Eastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia,Ĭlick Here to find ABBYY Finereader Express Edition For Mac (Download). Perry checks into a hotel to throw a birthday party with his old band mates and hopes it could reignite some passion in himself. Fast forward 20 years he now works in the family hardware store which his younger brother manages, he is married with two young children and feels life is passing him by as he approaches his 40th birthday. Armstrong plays Perry Miller who in 1995 was the singer in a popular punk band. Ordinary World is an awful mid life crisis film starring Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of the band Green Day. Overall, the movie, written and directed by Lee Kirk, just took way too long to get unraveled, but at least the final parts of the film prevented it from being a complete clunker, in my opinion. Thus, the film will follow Perry for one day,as he ends up spontaneously arranging a birthday party at a very fancy hotel, in NYC. He's having trouble, as he's ready to celebrate his 40th birthday, accepting living in his "ordinary world", as a husband and father of two, and mired in a job with his brother in a family owned hardware store. Now he's quite a scatterbrained but decent guy going through a midlife crisis. Billie Joe Armstrong (the lead vocalist for Green Day) stars here as Perry, a former punk rocker who left the band some years before to start a family. I felt there was a better movie in here somewhere that never really emerged, as the film got mired in awkward and flat humor, plus some plot elements that just didn't ring true. If only the first hour of this film was as good as its final twenty minutes. Still, despite the earnestly honorable intentions, and in keeping with the film's title, all involved here wind up coming off as not much more guessed it. In all candor, the same can be said of the turns turned in by the flick's supporting stable of actors, which includes a trio of highly capable pros in Selma Blair, Chris Messina and Fred Armisen. To the point where Armstrong's underplaying of his understated character never managed to amplify and fully engage me. However, he proves to be just a little TOO passive in this role. ![]() Now granted, Armstrong's Perry is of decidedly docile demeanor, having ostensibly fallen into the mostly uneventful life he now leads. Writer/Director Lee Kirk thrusts it completely upon Armstrong to carry his movie, as the brilliant musician performs in practically every single one of it's scenes. While the hard driving original music Armstrong contributes is fantastic, particularly the amped-up onslaught that mule kick starts the story, the superlatives for this largely lukewarm effort pretty much start and end there. When presented with the opportunity to celebrate his 40th birthday in grand style he does it up right in a posh New York City hotel suite, together with his ex band-mates and a pack of party animals he's heretofore never met. This cat is a fish flung FAR out of water as domesticated husband, father and feckless hardware store sales guy. The comedy stars Green Day front-man Billie Joe Armstrong as Perry, a just turned middle-aged singer/guitarist on indefinite hiatus from his once-promising rock group. I really wanted to like "Ordinary World". I tried it, but it didn't feel as good as i3, so I didn't stick with it. If you miss a tiling window manager, there is also Amethyst. But Rectangle has even more options than Magnet, so it looks like an excellent replacement. I started using Magnet because Spectacle didn't have some shortcuts (like "Split into 1/3 of the screen"). If you prefer a free alternative, there is also Rectangle - a successor of the discontinued Spectacle app. It sounds like a lot of keys to press simultaneously, but I mapped all 3 of them to 1 key using Karabiner-Elements (mentioned below). By default, it uses ⌃+⌥ as a modifier, which conflicts with a lot of my VS Code settings (I'm using ⌃+⌥ as a modifier for all my custom shortcuts). But the best features that come with the Powerpack are the "Alfred Workflows" - user-defined scripts that let you automate many tasks. It enables a few more features like a text expansion (here called "snippets") or the clipboard history. ![]() But the PowerPack (a paid extension) is where it really packs a punch. Even without the PowerPack, it's much more powerful than Spotlight. So when I got my Mac, one of the first things I did was to replace Spotlight with Alfred. I used Launchy on Windows and GNOME Do on Linux, and they are both great (just having a launcher will make you feel much more productive). And I absolutely love it! I knew about its existence even before owning a Mac, and I envied Mac users to have such a great launcher. Whenever I see something annoying, I want to drop everything and try to fix it right away. I could spend days just tweaking things on my computer.
